Welcome, I am glad you are here.

With nearly 25 years of experience in social work and mental health, I offer compassionate, person-centered care to adults, seniors, and those who care for them. My private practice, based in Crested Butte and Gunnison, Colorado, provides individual and small group therapy, caregiver support, and personalized dementia coaching.

As a clinically trained social worker, I bring both professional knowledge and lived experience—resuming my clinical hours after raising a family and supporting  my aging parents. I specialize in working with the sandwich generation, caregivers, and those adjusting to chronic illness, cognitive changes, or life-altering diagnoses. I have also worked for many years with survivors of sexual and domestic violence towards each survivor’s own definition of thriving.  My goal is to provide authentic conversations with real people, always grounded in dignity and humanity.

I believe you are your own expert, I happen to know some evidence based methods to employ, and I would be honored to walk with you during this season of your life.

My practice is rooted in the social work values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of every person, the importance of human relationships, integrity and competence.

I believe therapy should be accessible and affordable.  Determining if you've found the right provider can take a few sessions and it shouldn't break the bank in the process.

I received both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Kansas in the early 2000's.  During that time KU's School of Social  Welfare was instrumental in developing  the Strengths Perspective in mental health services. Over the last two decades my toolbox has grown, but focusing on people's strengths rather than deficiencies has always been central to how I practice. I utilize a variety of evidence-based approaches, including  solution focused brief therapy, narrative and dignity therapies, cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, as well as elements of dialectical behavior therapy,  and internal family systems.

It has always been important to be of service to my community and I think my work experience highlights that.  Most recently, I worked as GVH's Medical Social Worker and Bereavement Coordinator supporting patients in the Oncology, Home Health and Hospice departments as well as providing grief counseling to both Hospice families and the broader community.

I have many years of experience working for a sexual violence resource center in Kansas City, where my roles over the years were diverse; from community education to individual and group therapy to working on Sexual Assault Response Teams in the metro area. I have worked at domestic violence shelters, in foster care, and with folks with intellectual disabilities. I always knew the back side of my career would be in private practice, after many years of professional growth and experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at dawnmadrickstewart@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Great question.  I can offer three options depending on your needs:

1. In office sessions located at 319 Elk Ave. Unit 2 in Crested Butte.  Location in Gunnison to be determined.

2. Home visits for clients experiencing side effects of treatment or with physical challenges for whom getting out to the office is very difficult.

3. Virtual sessions via Simple Practice ( telehealth platform)

I anticipate being fully credentialed with the following entities in 2026:

- Medicare

- Medicaid

- VA Benefits

- Local EAP programs

- Common Private Insurance carriers in the valley

I believe therapy should be accessible and affordable.  Consequently, I offer a sliding scale option and accept scholarships through  partnerships with Living Journeys, Gunnison Tough, and CB State of Mind

Another great question.  While I have experience working with children, I do not have a space conducive to creative and play therapies- which I believe young children need.  This is a long range goal of mine in conjunction with several community partners.

I would be happy to consider working with teens on grief work and where grief and trauma/violence intersect.  Please reach out to discuss your needs.
